GOOD TO KNOW
Since prehistoric times, people have chosen to settle in the beautiful Vaunage plain, nestled between Nîmes, the banks of the Vidourle and the Mediterranean Sea. During the Roman period, the region was crossed by the road linking Nîmes to Sommières, where the former municipal campsite is located. The surrounding countryside was dotted with numerous farms and agricultural estates.
The village of Calvisson took shape during the Middle Ages with the establishment of the Saint-Saturnin Priory, whose church remains its finest example. Later, in the 11th century, the construction of a castle on the hilltop left lasting traces of the Wars of Religion, as Calvisson became one of the main centres of Protestant resistance in the region.
The 18th and 19th centuries marked a period of prosperity for Calvisson, driven in particular by the wine trade. During this time, a new way of life emerged, reflected in the construction of elegant town houses throughout the village. Enjoy this walk and discover the history and charm of Calvisson, just a short distance from Camping Le Garanel in Sommières.
