Rando vin & Vidourle

Between the Vidourle River and the surrounding hills, this walk takes you through vast vineyards and traditional farmhouses known as mas.

Start your walk from the former municipal campsite in Sommières. Cross the historic town centre towards the railway station, then follow the greenway to the Bois de Massereau. Leave the greenway and continue along the Chemin du Grès. Carry on towards Mas de Christin, Corbières, Bois du Roi and Les Combes. From there, head to Belleau, La Violette and the Castle. Finish your walk by returning to the railway station via the Porte de la Taillade.

Points of interest

  • The 1st-century Roman bridge crossing the Vidourle, part of the ancient route linking Nîmes and Toulouse, originally had at least 21 arches.
  • The heritage trail through the town centre, showcasing the history of Sommières
  • The wine estates (mas), traditional agricultural estates dedicated to viticulture.
  • The Greenway, a safe and pleasant path following the route of the former railway line.

Additional information: Viticulture has been a centuries-old tradition in the region. Although the Greeks introduced new grape varieties, it was during the Roman occupation that vineyards spread throughout the area. The first large vineyards date back to the early centuries AD, with the establishment of Roman villas and traditional mas estates. Deeply rooted in the region’s history, the vineyards stretch across the hillsides all the way to the Cévennes.
