ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Quarrying by hand began during the Gallo-Roman period and came to an end after the Second World War. The shelly limestone extracted here is soft, porous and easy to carve, making it widely used for the construction of local houses as well as structures such as the inner galleries of the Nîmes Arena. The inhabitants of Junas were allowed to collect leftover stones to build their own homes, which explains their solid appearance. In recent years, stonemasons and sculptors have left their artistic mark throughout the Quarries and the village.
